The discipline of Fluid Mechanics is one of the first disciplines found in Beihang University, and is also among the earliest ones in China. It was granted to confer Ph. D degree in 1981 and post-doctoral research station in 1983. Laboratory for National Defense Key Project has been set-up in this institute with the approval of both the State Education Commission and the State Planning Commission in 1991. National Laboratory of Computation Fluid Mechanics has been built-up with the approval of National Defense Industry commission since 1994. Moreover, it has been entitled as Key Laboratory of Fluid Mechanics(Ministry of Education) in 2000 and Universities teaching demonstration center of Beijing in 2009.
The Institute of Fluid Mechanics owns a staff team of 42 faculties, including 14 professors and 16 associated professors. Among them, two are Academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences/Engineering, four are Yangtze River Scholar Distinguished Professor, two have been supported by National Funds for Distinguished Young Scientists, four have been rewarded as Talent through the Century and Talent of the New Century, one is rewarded as National Outstanding Scientific and Technological Workers, one is listed in the New Century National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project.

2. Project and Rewards
In the recent five years, the institute has taken more than 300 scientific research projects, including National Basic Research Program (973 program), National High Technology Research and Development Program (863 program), Monumental Projects of Natural Sciences Foundation, Key Project of Natural Science Foundation, National Funds for Distinguished Young Scientists, National Defense Key project, National basic pre-research project and so on.
The institute has received 5 rewards beyond second prize of the provincial and ministerial level, and achieved 8 National Patents in recent five years.
3. Publication
The institute has published 9 textbooks/monographs and more than 300 research papers in recent five years. The published journal has covered almost all the well-known journals in Fluid mechanics, such as Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Physics of Fluids, Journal of Computational Physics, Physical Review E, AIAA Journal、Journal of Experimental Biology and Experiments in Fluids.
The research in 'flow separation and control', 'unsteady high lift mechanisms in insect flying', 'computational fluid mechanics' and 'transition and turbulence structure' has world-wide influence, and is known to be in the first class of the whole world.
4. Teaching
The institute has enrolled 40 post-doctor (13 in station), 150 Ph.D students (94 in school), more than 200 master students (66 in school) in recent five years. It has produced one National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation, and two Ph.D dissertation has been nominated to this prize.
The institute opens two National Excellent Courses and two Beijing Excellent Courses for under-graduates. It holds one award of Second Prize of National Excellent Teaching Achievements and one award of First Prize of Beijing Excellent Teaching Achievements. The faulty team has two Outstanding Teacher of Chinese Society of Mechanical and two Beijing Outstanding Teacher. Moreover, two published textbook have been rewarded as Beijing Excellent Textbook.
5. Facilities
The institute have four low-speed wind tunnels, two high-speed wind tunnels, three low-speed water channels and several Biofluid experimental platforms. Among them, the low-speed wind tunnel D4 has a cross section size of 1.5m in experiment section, with the maximum speed up to 80m/s, and is well known for its quality of low turbulence/noise level. The high-speed wind tunnel G1, has an experimental cross section size of 0.1m*0.1m, with the speed ranging from 1.5Ma to 3.5Ma. One of the low-speed water tunnels is the largest one in Asia, which has an experimental cross section size of 1.2m*1.2m. These facilities have been equipped with force measurement system, hot-wire anemometry, pressure scanning system, Particle Image Velocemetry system.
High performance parallel computation system has been constructed and updated, including a total capacity of 700 CPU cores, with the Peak Calculation Capability up to 5000 billion per sec.
